Der internationale Wettbewerb für das weit ausgedehnte Planungsgebiet Litang im Zentrum Tianjins hatte die Aufgabe, eine repräsentative Form für diesen Bereich der Stadt neu zu entwickeln. Im Gegensatz zu den vielen kleineren Parkanlagen Tianjins, bietet sich hier die Chance, einen identitätsstiftenden grünen Salon als Herzstück der Stadt zu entwickeln.
Um diesem Salon Raum zu geben, haben wir uns entschieden, einen Kernbereich in den Dimensionen von annähernd 400 m x 1200 m als Parkett frei von Gebäuden zu belassen. So entsteht ein großer offener Freiraum, der geeignet ist, verschiedene öffentliche Veranstaltungen, wie Ausstellungen, Festivals, Konzerte oder Public Viewing, aufzunehmen. Dieses Parkett wird von erhöhten Terrassen flankiert: im Norden überdecken sie die Einkaufszone und im Süden stellen sie den Boulevard dar, der gesäumt wird von bedeutenden kulturellen Gebäuden, wie der Bibliothek, dem Museum, dem Theater u. a. Diese Gebäude bilden zusammen mit der eindrucksvollen Szenerie des Kongress- und Entertainmentkomplexes den adäquaten architektonischen Rahmen für die Parkanlage, dessen Wirkung durch Hochhäuser, die entlang der begleitenden Straßen in zweiter Reihe stehen, verstärkt wird. An der Ostseite haben wir die Gebäudefront für die angrenzenden Quartiere zurückgesetzt, um dem architektonischen Rahmen für den Park eine klare rechtwinklige Kontur mit einer akzentuierten Eingangssituation an der Zishui - Straßenachse zu geben. Nur im Westen bleibt der neue Stadtgarten weit geöffnet, um die Stadthalle mit einzubeziehen und einen freien Übergang zur existierenden Parkanlage und dem Boulevard entlang des Stadions zu gewähren. Ein schlanker neuer Licht-Turm dient als Point de Vue in der Achse der Zishiu Straße und erscheint als Obelisk in moderner Form, der den Fokus auf den offenen Raum der Übergangszone lenkt.
Das Rückgrat des urbanen Konzeptes ist ein Stadtparcour mit Priorität für Fußgänger und Fahrradfahrer, der in Zukunft das Gebiet mit dem Hai River im Osten und das Stadion-Gebiet im Westen verbinden wird. Zusammen mit der Untergrund-Metro könnte dies eine attraktive innerstädtische Verbindung werden, die eine Politik der Energieeinsparung durch die Reduzierung des Autoverkehrs verfolgt.

 

1st Prize for the International Competition Litang · Tianjin · China

The key task of the international competition for the extensive development area “Litang” in the center of Tianjin was to develop a distinguished design for this area of the city. In contrast to the numerous small parks scattered across Tianjin, the design team recognized the unique opportunity of creating a strong identity piece – an expansive green salon in the heart of the city.
In order to give this salon space, we decided to leave a core open urban floor space of 400 x 1200 m free of buildings. This large, open space is flexible and can host various public events, such as exhibitions, festivals, concerts, public viewing and so on. The green floor is flanked by raised terraces: to the north the terraces roof over retail, to the south the terraces form a boulevard lined with important cultural buildings such as the city library, museums and the theatre. Together with the impressive scenery of the Congress and Entertainment Complexes, these buildings form a dramatic architectonic framework for the park. High-rise buildings are set back to the second row behind, reinforcing the architectural backdrop. To the east, the building facades are shaped so that they form a clear 90 degree edge, thereby accentuating the entrance of the Zishui Street axis, an important existing street, into the park.
In contrast, the park is open to the west, integrating the existing Town Hall into the site and vouchsafing a dynamic connection to an existing park and the boulevard along the stadium. A slender and modern light pole is the focus point of Zishiu Street axis and appears as a modern obelisk, drawing attention to the dynamic transitional zone at this end of the open space.
At the center of the urban planning concept is a city circulation parcours which gives priority to pedestrians and bicyclists. In particular, this circulation route will be extended in the future to connect the Hai River to the east with the site and carry on to the stadium development area beyond to the west. This important circulation structure will be further complimented by an underground metro stop, meeting energy saving requirements by reducing the need for automobile traffic.
